3 takeaways from Paraclete vs. Chaminade football scrimmage – High School Sports News, Scores, Videos, Rankings – SBLive – scorebooklive.com

WEST HILLS – For the first time since December 2019, there was high school football in California on Saturday. The regular season may not start until next week, but a few teams scrimmaged ahead of their openers. SBLive reporter Connor Morrissette attended Saturday’s Paraclete vs. Chaminade scrimmage and breaks down his takeaways from the game below.

BOTH TEAMS HAVE NEW QB’S

Paraclete and Chaminade are in the same boat at the quarterback spot. They each have senior Division 1 signees who have opted out of the spring season. Paraclete’s CJ Montes (New Mexico) and Chaminade’s Jaylen Henderson (Fresno State) were both at the scrimmage but in street clothes. They’ll act as coaches for their respective teams over the next few weeks.

Paraclete played junior quarterback VJ Greenwale for the majority of the scrimmage. Chaminade played both sophomores Indiana Wijay (Alemany transfer) and Jake Macias.

“I thought Indiana did some good things and I thought Jake did some good things,” Chaminade head coach Ed Croson said. “We’ll play both of them.”

WIDE RECEIVERS IMPRESS

Chaminade sophomore Ian Duarte and junior Dominic Arango-Serna, a Canoga Park transfer, each caught short passes and turned them into long touchdowns in the scrimmage. For Paraclete, junior receiver Treyshun Hurry, a Palmdale transfer, consistently got open and also scored a touchdown. He looked like a number one receiver.

ISAIAH NAVARRO AND GAVIN DEPEDRO HAVE BIG NIGHTS FOR PARACLETE

Isaiah Navarro, the Paraclete senior defensive lineman who sent out a viral tweet criticizing California Gov. Gavin Newsom for not allowing high school sports, looked like a player who desperately wants to make the most of the spring season. He made the first tackle of the game for the Spirits and had multiple tackles for loss in the scrimmage. He also stopped Chaminade on a 4th down and short. Navarro was impressive.

“I’m proud, but I could do a lot more,” he said.

Junior linebacker Gavin DePedro returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown for Paraclete and also had an interception. Paraclete had a great night on special teams that included a long field goal, multiple long returns, multiple fumble recoveries and the touchdown.
