West Texas A&M announces spring football schedule
CANYON – West Texas A&M head coach Hunter Hughes announced football’s spring practice dates as well as the date for the Spring Game.
The Buffs will use the 15 practices allowed by the NCAA during the spring in preparation for the 2021 season. One of those practices will be the team’s annual Spring Game, which is set for April 17 at 6 p.m. at Buffalo Stadium.
Practices are open to the public and media. Fans are also encouraged to follow WT’s social media platforms to keep up the Buffs throughout the spring.

Buffs basketball fifth in final NABC Top 25
CANYON – West Texas A&M is ranked fifth in the final National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II Top 25 after winning their fourth consecutive Lone Star Conference Championships last Saturday at the First United Bank Center in Canyon. The Buffs enter postseason play ranked in the Top 5 for the third consecutive year.
Colorado Mesa is now No. 1 in the nation after picking up eight of the 16 first-place votes after defeating Colorado School of Mines in the RMAC Championship. Northern State is second with Mercyhurst in third and Northwest Missouri State in fourth. WT is fifth followed by Colorado School of Mines, Truman State, Flagler, Hillsdale and Lubbock Christian. DBU is the only other LSC team ranked coming in at 16th.
The Buffs open NCAA Tournament play on Sunday in the South Central Region Semifinal against the winner of No.16 DBU and Arkansas Tech. Tip is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock.
Schedule change for WT baseball
CANYON – West Texas A&M head baseball coach Matt Vanderburg has announced a schedule change for this weekend’s Lone Star Conference series against Arkansas-Fort Smith at Wilder Park in Canyon.
The series was originally scheduled for a single-game on Friday night followed by a Saturday doubleheader but the threat of storm on Saturday in the Texas Panhandle has forced a change to the schedule.
The teams will now face off in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon starting at 3 p.m. followed by the series finale on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. in Canyon.
The Buffs enter the weekend with an overall record of 12-3 following a Top-25 series victory on the road last weekend at #11 UT Tyler.
WT softball ranked 19th in latest NFCA DII Top 25 poll
LOUSIVILLE, Ky. – The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M dropped two spots in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Top 25 Poll to rank 19th. WT opened the conference season 0-4 after falling to nationally ranked UT Tyler and Texas A&M-Commerce to move to a 12-4 overall record.
Southern Arkansas remained atop the NFCA poll for the fifth consecutive week with 2-0 record receiving 13 first-place votes. North Georgia follows in second with two first-place votes followed by Texas A&M-Commerce (one first-place vote), Augustana (S.D.) and Valdosta State to round out the top five.
The Lady Buffs return to Schaeffer Park as they welcome Lubbock Christian and No. 24 Angelo State for LSC doubleheader action on Friday and Sunday. Game one against the Lady Chaps is set for 4 p.m. on Friday.
Saldana’s goals seal deal in Buffs upset over No. 10 St. Mary’s
SAN ANTONIO – The West Texas A&M men’s soccer team picked up a Lone Star Conference victory as they defeated No. 10 St. Mary’s on Tuesday night. The Buffs defeated the Rattlers 2-1 with the help of two goals from newcomer Giancarlo Saldana as both teams moved to 2-1-0 in league play.
The Buffs outshot the Rattlers 6-5 as each team landed three shots on goal. Alexander Vencel earned the start between the post as the senior registered two saves in 90 minutes to move to 2-1-0 on the season.
The Buffs return to The Pitch this weekend as they host Dallas Baptist. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Lady Buffs knock off unbeaten No. 2 Angelo State
CANYON – The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs used long scoring runs and high energy at the WTAMU Fieldhouse “The Box” on Tuesday night as they swept past the unbeaten No. 2 Belles of Angelo State (26-24, 25-22, 25-13) in Lone Star Conference action.
Torrey Miller led the way for the Lady Buffs as the sophomore registered 21 kills on 41 swings with just two attack errors to hit an incredible .463 followed by Porsha Porath with seven kills and Lauren Marler with six. Sadie Snay paced the WT offense with 37 assists and 11 digs for her own double-double while Chandler Vogel led the way in the back row with 13 digs.
The Lady Buffs registered 47 kills on 115 swings with nine attack errors to hit .330 on the night with 44 assists, six service aces, 42 digs and five total blocks in the sweep.
The Lady Buffs and Belles ended the regular season at The Box on Wednesday night.
Buffs finish fourth at LCU Chap Classic
CANYON – West Texas A&M men’s golf shot a 309 (+21) in Tuesday’s final round to finish fourth at the LCU Chap Classic at The Rawls Course (Par 72, 7,211 Yards). WT was led by Daniel Unger and Hugo Larsson who tied for 10th on the player leaderboard with a +7 (223).
Odessa College claimed the team title with an 874 (+10) followed by Lubbock Christian (+10, 887), Western Texas College (+33, 897), West Texas A&M (+34, 898) and Hutchinson CC (+38, 902) to round out the top five.
WT finished the final round with 10 birdies highlighted by three from Larsson who shot a four-over 76 on Tuesday for his highest finish in Maroon & White.
The Buffs return to action on Monday and Tuesday as they head to Edmond, Oklahoma, to take part in the UCO Broncho Invitational at Oak Tree Country Club.
